Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus. On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise. “It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show. “It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.” “It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes. The Central Mystery: Will the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus? Considering the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way. “We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.” Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort. “My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Then again, why mess with the classics? “My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling. Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
