In a move inspired by fictional guards, Denmark's foreign ministry has initiated a night watch unit—far from guarding against fantasy threats, but to monitor Donald Trump as Denmark sleeps.

This night monitoring begins at 5pm local time daily and ends with a summary produced at 7 a.m., which is then distributed across government departments and concerned agencies detailing statements made and developments taking place.

This position is understood to have been established in the wake of the bilateral dispute involving Denmark and Washington over Greenland this spring, when the American leader suggested acquiring control of the strategic island.

Observers note that this initiative is among multiple examples of how Danish diplomacy and its civil service have had to adjust to the changed landscape of the second Trump administration.

An insider close to the ministry remarked, “It is fair to say that the circumstances in Greenland and the time zone gap between Copenhagen and the US was quite an important reason prompting this system in the spring.”

Rather than everybody needing to immediately reach for their phones to stay informed on news from the United States, the ministry explained it had undertaken a collective effort to remain informed on Trump activities.

An expert, a ex- chief analyst at the defense intelligence service, stated that this move demonstrated, “as long understood,” that the idea of the United States as Denmark's largest and most important ally was no longer valid. “Partnerships are founded on shared principles and a common threat perception,” he said. “Trump shares neither of those with us and it can be said he doesn't share it with most Europeans.”
