🔗 Share this article NY Launches Online Platform for Public to Submit Immigration Footage After Detentions of 4 American Citizens The state AG has introduced a fresh online portal asking residents to share visual evidence of ICE operations across the state. This step follows a day after a significant immigration operation disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread protests. American Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Demonstrations occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday. "Each citizen is entitled to reside free from terror," the attorney general wrote in a release. "Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations during the raid, I urge you to share that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to assessing these submissions and determining any violations of law." Portal Features The form includes fields to send photos and videos of the incident, plus a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, users must mark a box that states that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a lawsuit or public report." Information about the Chinatown Raid The Chinatown raid, which observers say featured more than 50 federal agents, happened in a popular district of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available en masse – frequently to sightseers. Footage of Tuesday's raid show multiple hooded and equipped officers zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers trailed the personnel down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was noticed traveling down the Manhattan avenues. Political Response During a midweek briefing organized with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for unjustly." He said the citizens were released on the following day with no legal action taken. "The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a militarized effort to incite tension. It is purely a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to deploy the armed forces to prevent conflict that they have created." Widespread Condemnation Anger over the ICE raid escalated – each of the political contenders denounced the incident, including NY's governor. "Yet again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," a political candidate wrote. New York City immigrant rights groups voiced concern as well. "Federal officers raided Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to target local sellers attempting to earn income. This raid had no relation to citizen protection and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition. ICE Policies Official guidelines forbids the detention of US citizens and the organization has stated it will not arrest or detain citizens. However, external research has found that more than 170 citizens have been held against their will by federal agents during the period of the current administration. Recent Pattern Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide this year. A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the present government. Protests against federal operations are ubiquitous along with allegations of force and cruel conditions. Recently, a document filed by civil rights groups alleged medical neglect of women with child in ICE facilities.
